Health Systems Are Planning For Growth

Two-thirds of health systems plan to acquire or expand care settings this year, according to HIDA’s 2018 Provider Survey: Managing Growth. With this growth comes a number of supply chain challenges, particularly aligning acute and post-acute supply chains. A majority of respondents say working with a national group purchasing organization (GPO) is helpful in managing this and other challenges, and half plan to expand GPO usage.

Hospitals and physician offices are a key priority for growing health systems. Nearly one-third (31%) of respondents plan to expand their hospitals and 15% plan to build new ones. Similarly, 28% plan to expand their physician offices and 18% plan to build new ones. Physician offices remain the leading acquisition target, with 31% of health systems planning to acquire providers and 18% planning to acquire new facilities.
As systems plan to grow, cost-containment and patient satisfaction remain top priorities, and providers are taking a number of steps to achieve these aims. To learn more about these and other insights contained in this year’s survey, visit
